This month's #StyleMe Instagram challenge from Dean Street Society includes a stylish book club selection: The Meaning of Sunglasses: A Guide to (Almost) All Things Fashionable by Hadley Freeman. And since I'm continuing on my quest to define my personal style, I thought I would read along...

The book is organized in a kind of dictionary format, with entries and descriptions for everything from animal print and ankle boots to signature style and trench coats. I enjoy A-Z style books, so I thought it would be a fun, light read and have some helpful tips or advice. I'm about halfway at this point, and I think the book's just so so (though the discussion on the book club's Facebook group is quite interesting). The author pokes fun at a lot of the silly things about the fashion industry, and it's pretty amusing. I guess though I was hoping for more of a book of style do's, and it seems much more like a list of don'ts from the perspective of an industry insider - and I'm not all that interested in the industry, but more interested in personal style. And while the sarcasm is funny and there are some good points, it can all start to feel a little negative.
What I really like though is the list of photo prompts based on the entries in the book - it was fun to come up with my own interpretations of these (even if the author did pooh-pooh a bunch of these things, like the animal print I love). A recap of the first half of the month:
accessories | animal print | ballet
exercise | hair accessories | jeans

I love the idea behind the photo prompts, and it is interesting to see what things people come up with. You have a cute collection of ballet flats... and I spy some cute hair ties ;)
