wearing lately: October 10x10 recap

I really enjoy putting together monthly mini capsules of current wardrobe favorites that mix and match well together, so it's probably not a surprise that the 10x10 challenge (make 10 outfits out of 10 items) caught my attention. So I focused my October capsule this way, and it was a lot of fun to stretch to 10 outfits, from the 5-6 outfits I usually come up with from a capsule of this size.

So here is a recap of all of my outfits (you can see original posts here, and a collage of the items here). It's not surprising that they look quite cohesive, since they're made up of the same items, but I do appreciate how they manage to look not too similar. Moral of the story, you can do a lot with a little... and I'm feeling energized about streamlining my wardrobe again after this.

Overall, I am pretty darn pleased with all of these outfits, actually, but I think the last one, with the white jeans and suede jacket, has to be my favorite. (Helps that it came with an extremely delicious date night dinner.) What's your favorite? Have you done a challenge like this? I want to see more examples, now that I'm all jazzed about this!

five things Friday: October favorites edition

One great thing about doing a monthly recap in the form of favorites? Focusing on those instead of some not-favorites (I'm looking at you, not having a kitchen sink for most of October, and the last week of nonstop rain). So here, instead, are 5 good things!

favorite Etsy find: I found a few great handmade items this month, like this for a Halloween costume and this for a new nursing job gift, but my favorite find was Hendrik's I'm 4! birthday tee from Ahoy Amigo. It was perfect for his party!

favorite hometown shop: writing a "live like a local" post about my town for Kait's blog, and a corresponding overview of all of the fun stuff to do downtown made me even more excited about living here. As did a little wander through our local candy store for some treats...

favorite outerwear: though I loved it that this month was so unseasonably warm that jackets weren't necessary on many days, it wasn't so bad when the temperatures dipped because I got to pull out this new one. I wear my downtown jacket a TON, so adding a warmer version to the collection was a no-brainer.

favorite freebie: I received The Windfall, a fun comedy of manners type read, from Blogging for Books, which I enjoyed reading last week. In this story, the Jha family has come into a financial windfall after Mr. Jha sold his website for big bucks, and they are moving from their cramped middle-class apartment in a Delhi neighborhood to an upscale one - where the neighbors turn out to be just as zany, especially as Mr. Jha starts up a keeping-up-with-the-Joneses type rivalry with their new neighbors. I liked that in addition to the comedy, there were a few sympathetic characters (especially Mrs. Jha, and also a sweet romance between widowed neighbors) to take it beyond just caricatures and also allow the story to address some interesting topics of family, social status, pride, and modern love - both in the Indian culture in which the story takes place, and in general. Kevin Kwan (Crazy Rich Asians) and Jade Chang (The Wangs vs. the World) both blurbed this one, which was very appropriate - this read definitely made me think of their books in tone and themes, so if you enjoyed them, check out The Windfall.

favorite fall fun: there was apple picking and pumpkin decorating, sure, but my favorite fall fun was getting outdoors under some blue sky and riding down gravel roads lined with fall foliage, thanks to my new gravel-ready bike. Best way to enjoy a fall day!

All that good stuff, and we still have more fun to come in the last couple days of October... I've never been big into Halloween, but with a 4-year-old around, it gets fun. This weekend we'll kick things off with some festivities at the local museum, just down the street from us - can't wait to dress him up in his cute t-rex/dragon vest. What are your Halloween plans?

pin to present: fall date night style

The final outfit in the 10x10 challenge is thanks to Pinterest... I was already fully intending to include my favorite new jacket as one of my 10 items, and then when I spotted this fabulous way to make white jeans work for fall and date night at the same time (via Extra Petite), I immediately added in a camel sweater. And then lined up a babysitter and recreated the look (+ had an amazing dinner out with my mister).

Besides getting a great date night outfit from some Pinspiration, this is a win for the 10x10 challenge because it's something I think I wouldn't have come up with on my own - and I loved it. (Though I admit this outfit actually has a tiny cheat on the 10x10 challenge since these shoes aren't in my lineup - but hey! It's my blog. And they're very similar to the ankle boots I selected for the challenge - but way better for date night.)

Hendrik's "everything" 4th birthday party

When I asked Hendrik what kind of 4th birthday celebration he wanted, he replied with, "an everything party." What would an "everything" party entail, you might ask? Well, cake and food and presents and blowing out candles and "You're Welcome" (from Moana) and a wall of balloons, Hendrik would tell you - pretty much just all the birthday things. So that's what we did.

I love to plan Hendrik's birthday parties, but with two remodeling projects going on at once in our house, I just needed to keep it simple this year - not to mention move the whole shebang to my parents' house. So with some easy Paperless Post invites, a couple of quick DIYs + all of the generic "birthday" things you might think of (cake, sprinkles, balloons, party hats), primarily in Hendrik's favorite color (blue), and we had ourselves a great time.

For a fun activity I got some plain party hats and a bunch of stickers/things to glue on them - right up Hendrik's alley as he adores craft projects, plus it made for a more festive-looking party. And his (actual) request for a wall of balloons became this easy balloon arch. I thought it turned out so cool, but it was really quite easy to do in about an hour, with Peter blowing up the balloons, me tying them off with this handy device, and then attaching them to this super handy balloon decoration strip that has holes spaced every inch to just stick the balloon ties through. And to festive-ize the place settings a bit, I picked up some cute paper plates and stuck the leftover stickers from Hendrik's birthday treat onto the napkins.

For dinner, requested pizza and broccoli, so I just ordered some take & bakes and my mom roasted a few trays of broccoli, and then we followed that up with presents and cake, made by my dad to Hendrik's specifications: vanilla cake with chocolate frosting and rainbow sprinkles plus both colors of chocolate chips on top and chocolate chips inside. And then we capped the night with a little dance party from a playlist of Hendrik's faves: Moana and Puff the Magic Dragon.

And just to illustrate how very Hendrik it is to request an everything party: when we were getting ready for bed afterward and I asked him what his favorite part of the party was, he said, "The craft...and the presents...and my cake...and blowing out the candles...and all the persons". So yeah, basically all the things.

wearing lately: black and white and tan all over

If last week's outfit was "black and white and red all over", then this week's is the "tan all over" version of spicing up a simple black and white outfit - except for the whole "it's late October and the summer tan has faded" part, of course...

My October 10x10 challenge outfits are wrapping up, and this sweater is making its first appearance - along with some excitement about achieving one of the challenge's purposes: creative and effective utilization of my wardrobe. This sweater has nearly been on the closet cleanout chopping block several times because I just don't wear it that much, sometimes wondering if I really like the color or the fit. But pairing it with gingham and all-cognac accessories gave it some new life that I am quite pleased with.

And now that I also know about the idea of putting it under a matching jacket? It's a keeper! Stay tuned for that look on Thursday...

five things Friday: denim dress five ways

Recently I happened upon a J.Crew denim dress in my size when listing some items on Poshmark and though I don't really enjoy second-hand online shopping personally (too much to sift through!) I just couldn't pass up the deal (I think I paid $15?) on this classic J.Crew item, when it basically fell into my lap.

The thicker material and long sleeves make it a dress that's perfect for fall - especially because you can do bare legs in the transition period and then add leggings or tights as it gets colder.

I knew right away I wanted to include it in my list of options for my October 10x10 challenge not only because of this perfect season-appropriateness but also because it seemed like it would be really versatile. So I added an extra challenge, to see if I could remix it 5 ways, with just items from my challenge:

1. with a pop of red: the dress is cute on its own, but even cuter with red shoes and lips!

2. with a pop of stripes: Pinterest suggested this cute layering idea to me - bonus that it makes it even warmer if needed for a chilly fall day.

3. belted: easy, peasy - and though I usually don't try to be super matchy, I liked tying all the cognac accessories together.

4. bundled: plaid scarves = fall, and with my suede moto jacket, I think it makes a really cute and cozy look with this dress.

5. casual: adding some leggings underneath turns it into a more casual tunic type look. A bit of a different style for me, but I liked it to change things up.

So obviously I could be wearing this for pretty much any type of event I have planned for the weekend... maybe I'll go with the first one for Hendrik's birthday bash tomorrow!

pin to present: googly eyes pumpkin

If you haven't gotten around to any type of Halloween decorating yet my third Pinterest-inspired no-carve (+ preschooler friendly!) pumpkin idea is the easiest ever idea for you. All you need is a pumpkin and a pack of googly eyes, and you can make this eerily eyebally guy, just like Hendrik did:

He has been kind of obsessed with googly eyes lately after a project at school, so when I spotted this one on Pinterest, I knew it would be just the thing for a little Saturday project. It only took about 10 minutes to assemble, but we got a morning of fun out of it - Hendrik is a kid after my own heart in how much he loves a project, so we had the most delightful morning together, visiting the craft store and farmer's market for supplies, and then applying dots of glue and eyes. That was $6 well spent. (Plus no pumpkin gutting required - I find that so gross.)

around town: live like a local

My blog buddy Kait came up with the greatest idea for a guest post series: Live Like a Local, in which she invites other bloggers to share where they live, and what local gems are not to be missed by any visitors. I'm excited to have shared my town today - it might not be as glamorous as other featured locales like Palm Springs, or historic as places like Heidelberg, but it is really a great small town, situated on the shore of Lake Michigan, with plenty of local things to enjoy.

While I encourage you to go check out the full post about visiting Holland, I thought I'd go into a bit more detail here about one of my favorite areas: downtown.

Holland's downtown runs for several blocks of 8th Street and has tons of shops, restaurants, and such, making it very fun for a stroll. Major bonuses: in the spring and summer, there are always gorgeous flower beds (especially the tulip-filled ones in May!), and in the winter, it's always entirely walkable as all the sidewalks are fitted with a snowmelt system, meaning they're never snow-covered or icy, no matter the depths of winter we're in. It's the best!

So if you were to come downtown for the day, here are the things I'd say you can't miss. These are great for visitors, but they're also places that I walk over to from my home on a very regular basis.

shops

  • Frances Jaye: probably our most hip option in town for clothes and shoes for both men and women - always fun for a browse.
  • JB and Me: another local clothing boutique, with more of a boho feel, plus lots of great denim and shoes. They have some home stuff too, with displays that remind me of Anthropologie.
  • Urban Found: another clothes shop with a feel like Anthro/JB and Me.
  • Tip Toes: children's boutique with cute clothes from brands like Tea Collection, plus lots of toys and even a little tree house for kids to climb/play in while you shop.
  • The Sandcastle: the other place to stop if you've got kids along - the local toy store!
  • Gazelle Sports: all things running! Super knowledgeable staff, and I always like to browse the sale racks for something from Nike, Patagonia, Lole, etc.
  • The Outpost: all kinds of outdoorsy stuff for hiking, camping, and such, plus loads of Patagonia and North Face.
  • Reader's World: the downtown bookstore. Not the coziest place ever, but you really can't skip the local bookstore.
  • Cherry Republic: they've got all things cherry, from chocolate covered ones, to salsas and sodas and beyond. Definitely worth a stop, especially because there are always free samples out.
  • Michigan Pantry: lots more local foodie items to bring home, from nut mixes to chocolate colored blueberries, to local wines (+ tastings!).

restaurants/breweries

  • New Holland Brewing Pub on 8th: probably our most-visited restaurant, because they have some great quality pub food (the pizzas and salads are always favorites of ours) and of course excellent beer. Plus it's a pretty good place to go with kids, especially because of the big beer garden out back.
  • Our Brewing Company: great little brewery with interesting beers with a fun atmosphere and even games/pinball/trivia night for entertainment. They have free popcorn, but no other food - but you can bring in whatever you like, or even grab takeout from anywhere downtown. Our choices are usually pizza from Crust 54 or sushi from Mizu Sushi. Otherwise we just go for a pre-dinner drink!
  • Butch's Drydock: our go-to for a slightly fancier dinner. They've got a great wine/beer selection (you can go in and just shop that) along with great cocktails, and menu that changes seasonally. I've had some excellent fish dishes and much more.
  • Seventy-Six: so brand new that we haven't had a chance to eat there yet, but we fully expect it to be excellent, as it's by the same chef as one of our favorite restaurants in the region (Public). It's our first farm-to-table option downtown, and it looks great.
  • Windmill Restaurant: hole-in-the-wall type of breakfast place - which is my favorite kind of breakfast place. You've got your standard diner-type eggs, pancakes, and potatoes, and cheap too! Warning: if they're busy, you have to just stand in line and wait. There's no putting your name in.

other fun stuff

  • The Peanut Store: you can't miss our local candy shop, which has been around for 115 years.
  • The 205 Coffee Bar: our newest coffee shop of the 3 downtown is our best one, in my opinion (though I admit, that says nothing about the coffee, as I don't drink it...) - a pretty hip atmosphere, but my favorite part is how the front windows all open up on nice days so that you can sit outside as well.
  • Holland Area Arts Council: always fun (and free) to walk through and see what they have in the gallery here, and there's a makers' studio that has some open hours + some event times. Plus I have an extra special affinity for this place, as it's where we had our wedding reception.
  • Farmers market: down on the other end of 8th is our large farmers market that runs every Wednesday and Saturday in the late spring/summer/early fall. Tons of seasonal produce; local breads, coffees, cheeses, meats, etc.; and flowers that I can never resist. On Wednesdays in the summer there are fun kids' activities and story time put on by the library.
  • Downtown events: there's always something going on downtown, from Fall Fest to Tulip Time to sidewalk sales to Up on the Rooftops, a holiday event where you can get a peek into homes and offices above downtown shops. Check the Downtown Holland website for a calendar.

places to stay

  • rentals: check AirBnB and VRBO for rentals of apartments/homes downtown to really live like a local! Or check out Teerman Lofts, located above a shop downtown. It's my goal in life to retire to a place above a downtown shop, so I really want an excuse to check this place out...
  • City Flats Hotel: a contemporary, LEED-certified hotel. We've stayed here - it has a cool vibe and is very walkable to all restaurants and shops. Plus it has its own great bar + yummy flatbreads.
  • Courtyard by Marriott: I've never stayed there, but it does have a great location. And a pool.

So that's just downtown Holland - then there's also THE BEACH, our annual Tulip Time festival, the pretty historic district and the local college campus, not to mention tons of other restaurants/activities in nearby Grand Rapids. For even more fun stuff for every season, check out my ideas on Kait's blog!

17 October 2017

wearing lately: black and white and red all over

What's black and white and (pops of) red all over? The next stylings of my striped tee in the 10x10 remixing challenge! I'm also going with "well read all over" as a label for this outfit, because adding my glasses (that I wear only occasionally) always makes me feel like I'm giving off smart vibes for the day...

The moto jacket was a nice layer to add on a blustery fall day, but mostly I wanted this outfit to be all about the graphic black and white stripes paired with the bright red on the shoes and lips. Such a simple combination of jeans + tee + flats, but the graphic punch makes it turn into an outfit. Kind of my favorite kind of outfit to wear.

And I can't deny that the tassels on the flats make any outfit just a bit more punchy - aren't they great? Almost as great as the cutest tiniest tassels on this bracelet.

mini me Monday: easy preschool birthday treats

In the last year, Hendrik started receiving various birthday treats from kids in his daycare class, and he's become increasingly excited about the possibility of bringing something for his birthday - though only with constant seeking of reassurance that he doesn't have to give away ALL of the treats, but gets to keep one for himself.

So I knew we had to come up with something to bring to his preschool class today, but I wanted it to be something simple, that he could actually have a part in, and we also for my own reasons and according to classroom rules need it to be something not too sugary (e.g., the parent handbook says "no frosting").

What to make a birthday special with, then? How about fruit snacks with some cute "Hendrik is 4!" stickers?! Hendrik was a hard "yes" on these, because he is completely obsessed with these bunny fruit snacks - usually his first choice when he gets to choose something from the "lunchtime bin" of snack-y foods (and I feel reasonably good about them, being an organic brand). Plus he looooves sticking stickers, so this was the perfect little project for him to help me put together and hand out to his friends.

To make them, you just need to get the big box of fruit snacks from Costco or Amazon, along with some blank sticker sheets. I designed the images in Photoshop (borrowing a bit from the Paperless Post invite I'm using for his upcoming party), and then pasted them in to the appropriate Avery template for my sticker size and printed out. Easy! And cute too.

five things Friday: four-year-old favorites edition

The big event around here this weekend: Hendrik is turning 4! While I will also be indulging in my usual reminiscing of the day of his birth (re-reading his birth story and by having a milkshake to celebrate the feat of bringing this child into the world...now turning into drowning my emotions about where has my baby gone?!), really this weekend is going to be all about the things that our smart, creative, funny, gung-ho kid loves - so to kick it off, an update on Hendrik's current favorite things.

1. favorite bug: butterflies! What, your kid doesn't have a favorite bug? Mine has been known to freak out about encountering a bug and then follow it with, "but I do like butterflies! Butterflies are my favorite bug!" Also, every time he sees one flying around outside he exclaims, "look! My favorite bug!"

2. favorite form of entertainment: all things Thomas the Tank Engine. He actually doesn't really ever watch the show anymore, but he looooves playing with the tracks at Gigi's house and is obsessed with the YouTube channel Izzy's Toy Time, in which a family shares videos of their Thomas unboxings and all the cool tracks they build. He's also very into the cute little Thomas minis right now (latest acquisition was a bribery prize for no longer crying at school drop off...) and the Thomas minis iPhone app to build tracks.

3. favorite soundtrack: he is seriously obsessed with the music from Moana right now. It took us over a month to actually watch the whole movie, but we probably listened to "You're Welcome" every single day in between (he's already requested it be playing at his birthday party as well), plus all the other Moana songs, complete with his hysterical Hawaiian-inspired interpretive dance moves.

4. favorite cereal: Hendrik has always been a big fan of breakfast in any form, but more recently he's really been into cereal. Frosted mini wheats in all of their varieties - regular, blueberry, chocolate, strawberry - are usually the top pick.

5. favorite school work: necklace making. At his Montessori preschool, a good bit of the day is spent on "work" that kids can choose from the shelves, to do various learning activities, and probably 3/4 of the days Hendrik has chosen this necklace-stringing activity. He's even added his own bit of creativity and changed to bracelets a few times. It's the cutest thing to pick him up and see him sporting one of these creations, but now I have to figure out how to sneakily reduce the huge collection that has amassed around here...

And that's some of Hendrik's joys of life at age 4 (I should do this more - so fun to look back at 9 months, 13 months, 15 months17 months, 2.5 years) - and now we're getting ready to celebrate with more of them, like pizza. And maybe even juice. Living it up!

pin to present: herringbone mini pumpkins

Installment #2 in the 3-part "no carve pumpkins" series for this October is maybe not quite as kid-friendly, since it involves Sharpies and drawing straight lines, but it's just as easy and fun to add to your fall decor: herringbone mini pumpkins.

These little guys were something like 3 for $1 at my farmers market, so I snatched them up, and then remembered seeing this simple embellishment idea on Pinterest. You better believe I have metallic Sharpies included in my extensive stash, so all it took was digging those out and 5-10 minutes drawing on my pumpkins.

I like how they're kind of glam with the metallic, but the herringbone pattern makes them seem spider web-ish for Halloween. Yet they would still be most excellent centerpiece decor for Thanksgiving - so I think I just might have to make some more!

11 October 2017

reading lately: nerd love

I'm calling this latest set of books “nerd love” because all of them have some element of romance/relationship between characters you might consider to be a bit nerdy, but more so because the books revel so much in the nerdy loves of their characters - whether that’s programming, Star Wars, comics, books. And I can get on board with that! (English major nerd alert.)

When Dimple Met Rishi
Dimple has just graduated from high school and can’t wait to leave for college to get a break from her mom’s constant quest to find her the “Ideal Indian Husband.” She considers it a dream come true, if not a bit out of character, when her parents agree to let her go off to San Francisco for an intensive web development course in the summer before she starts college - but when she arrives, she realizes why: Rishi. He knows all about their parents’ plans to set them up in marriage and comes with the intent to woo her, not knowing that her parents have kept her in the dark about the whole thing. They get paired up to work on their app ideas, and Dimple finds that despite her best intentions, she might be falling for him… This book definitely has a lot of the YA romance tropes that make me roll my eyes a bit, but it really was quite charming, with cute and quirky charaters, and I loved the areas where it did go above and beyond the usual - with a more culturally diverse cast of characters, girls involved in things like programming. Definitely recommend if you want to be wrapped up in some bubbly YA rom-com type of fun for a few hours (it's a quick read!). 3.5/5 stars

The Impossible Fortress
Part coming-of-age story, part ode to 1980s nostalgia, this story is a feel-good read with a YA feel. Fourteen-year-old Billy Marvin and his friends run a little amok while his single mom works the night shift, innocent kind of fun until they hatch a crazy plan to steal from the corner shop the newly released edition of Playboy featuring Vanna White. As part of the plan, Billy is supposed to befriend the shop owner’s (supposedly) nerdy daughter to get the alarm code - but his own nerdiness comes out when they realize they are both trying to program computer games for a competition being judged by their idol. They decide to work together on a game and start to develop a relationship, until the planned heist goes down… This is kind of the 1980s, more chaste version of When Dimple Met Rishi, in a way, with the kids and their dreams of developing a computer game/app that will catch the attention of their hero in the business. And if you like books like Eleanor and Park or Ready Player One with their 1980s nostalgia, you would probably enjoy this one too - I liked it a lot but just didn’t find it to have quite as much charm as these (or When Dimple Met Rishi), so: 3/5 stars

Kindred Spirits
A Kindle Short from one of my favorite authors, Rainbow Rowell, this is a delightful little read that you could easily fit into a lunch break (and costs less than your sandwich). The story takes place outside of a movie theater, where the biggest Star Wars fans are camping out, waiting to get in to the first showing of the new movie. Except that when Elena shows up to get in line, she realizes it’s less of a camp and more like just two guys and some bad weather. She decides not to let it get in the way of her dream though, and sticks it out, eventually forming a bond with these guys and learning the ins and outs of camping out in line. I will say that I really don’t care about Star Wars (though I do have specific fond memories of my introduction to the original movie versions in middle school), but this is the kind of story where it doesn’t matter if you’re as nerdy about the thing that the characters are – it’s about their passion and their relationships, and through those, you do actually kind of end up caring about the nerdy thing on their behalf. If you like Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl or Eleanor and Park, this is in the same vein, and it’s a lot of fun. Usually I hate short stories because I’m left wanting more - I’m a novel reader through and through! - but this one was just right for me. 4/5 stars

Startup
You know how people like to say that the nerds in high school are the ones who are eventually going to come out on top? This book kind of illustrates the culmination of that, where all of the tech nerds make it big with their startups, raking in money from venture capitalists, and live the life in New York City with their fancy loft apartments and their Google office-like work perks like free fancy smoothies and meditation rooms. This social satire follows several characters through one app company’s attempt to gain major funding, from the startup’s founder with his over-the-top swagger, to a late 30-something social media assistant trying to navigate this “new” tech world and balance it with her home life, to a tech reporter trying to break a big story (spoiler alert: it has to do with that app company founder!). It’s a very of-the-moment kind of book, with all the specific references to various social media, clichés regarding the tech/app/social media world, and how modern life runs on all of these things, so I don’t know if it will stand the test of time, but it was a fun read for now! Often this kind of story stresses me out a bit to read, because you can see the bad choices the characters are about to make (gahhh! Don’t be sexting with your boss!), but I found this one surprisingly hard to put down. Kind of like how you can’t look away from a train wreck reality show… If you enjoy listening to How I Built This, or books like The Knockoff or Everybody Rise, you might want to check this one out. 3/5 stars

Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore
And now here's the one for the book nerds - aka me! I'm always a sucker for a book set in a bookstore/library, and one that has a mystery as part of it?! Sold. Lydia Smith is a bookseller who specializes in helping the most eccentric of customers at the Bright Ideas Bookstore; one day at closing she happens upon one of them, a troubled young man named Joey, hanged in the upper floor. This suicide sets her off on a path of trying to decipher clues Joey has cut from books, and it also brings her back to her long-hidden and repressed past, when she was the lone survivor of a never-solved murder. This cold case and Joey’s death end up intertwining in interesting ways as she investigates both… There’s some dark subject matter, but the tone is lighter, sometimes quirky - reminds me of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore in tone for a bookstore mystery. Really enjoyed reading this one. 4/5 stars

Here's where nerds come out on top - these stories about them are winners of books! Some others that I would put into this category have already been mentioned, but they deserve another because they're so good: Ready Player One, Eleanor and ParkMr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. Also, The Rosie Project.

wearing lately: stripes and slides

Back at it with the white jeans for fall - this time featuring the stripes and slides from my 10x10 challenge lineup. Some pops of fall-ish colors in the accessories make it all work for a mild early October day:

I've been seeing cute mules like these all over the place (by which I mean the internet) and have been tempted by this trend, but they don't end up seeming that practical for Michigan - we're fast approaching sock weather... meaning my heels are going to need warmth and/or protection from something cold and wet (can't say the s*word yet).

So when I saw these slides on clearance for $6 at Target the other week, I thought it would be the perfect compromise of something inexpensive but wearable while we're having way warmer than usual weather that is a similar idea. They're super comfy and give kind of a cool Madewell-y vibe to an outfit, I think, so I'm going to be pleased to style them more summer-like next year too!
