five things Friday: colored bottoms edition

Colored jeans don't seem to be quite as much "in" as they were a couple of years ago, based on my perusing of the online options, which is a shame, as they made for perfect mom style: super easy to throw on with a white tee or a chambray, but a far more interesting outfit than when paired with your standard jeans. Though the colored jeans aren't so easy to come by anymore, there are still tons of great colored bottoms that can play the same role, especially for easy casual-but-cute summer wear:

If I had to do more work style, I'd definitely go for a pair of blue ankle pants like these, paired with a simple white sleeveless blouse for a perfect summer office outfit. Since the work-from-home lifestyle is a bit more casual (and less air-conditioned), I'm way into colored shorts or skirts + white tees like these - and this lace skirt would be the perfect candidate for a fancy/casual mix with a chambray shirt.

I have a coral skirt and cobalt shorts that have been getting plenty of wear this summer - what colors have you been reaching for on bottom? Come and share next Tuesday in the next #momstyleremix linkup!

five things Friday: gray area edition

Here's little hint of what my favorite color is going to be for dressing this month - shopping the gray areas of the Shopbop site and sharing five favorites for your Friday:

Last month I was loving the black, white & denim for my neutral wardrobe base, but as the weather gets colder, I start to prefer gray as a softer, cozier feeling alternative. I also love how it's just a little unexpected - for example, gray ankle boots go with just as many things as cognac or black ones, but they're just so much more fun for adding a little twist to your basic outfits. Pretty darn tempted by that pair!

five things Friday: more merlot edition

Though I've gone more neutral with this month's mini wardrobe, I'm still loving burgundy (or marsala or merlot - all yummy) as was clear in my September lineup - which is great, because it's the perfect accent to the blacks and whites and tans, especially in the form of these pieces:

These all kind of make you want to get dressed up and go out for a glass of red, don't they? Cheers to the weekend - hope yours is a good one!

five things Friday: go green edition

Like a denim jacket, a cargo jacket is a year-round mainstay in my wardrobe (see winter, spring, summer, and fall), but I get especially excited about styling up this army green staple in this time of year because the color seems so perfect for the season. Pulling it out inspired me to do another Shopbop shop-by-color search, in green this time around:

Wouldn't all of these be great for a fall wardrobe? Getting the pants in this color means you can even wear them with the denim jacket...

five things Friday: shop by color edition

My winter capsule reveal showed a lot of neutrals again, but the pops of color I decided to go with are bold indeed: poppy red. This has been one of my favorite colors for a long time, and an occasional dose of it is just what a girl needs in stretches of dreary winter weather.
shop by color: poppy red

While I was thinking about how to wear a pop of poppy for winter I was trolling around on Shopbop, filtering by color, and as I scrolled through the reds in the sweaters, purses, and more, I spotted these great items that all have the pop of poppy going on. Aren't they just happy? But not too overwhelming, by using colorblocking or pattern to tone it down a bit.

What's your happy color for winter?

five things Friday: tortoiseshell edition

Thanks for all your votes on my at home glasses try on a few weeks ago! I ended up with the Watts and am loving using them to accessorize some outfits (oh, and aid in nighttime driving, of course). I'm also loving the tortoiseshell finish, which has inspired this week's 5-things roundup:

Just like leopard, it really is a neutral - goes with everything - and I think it might be my new favorite animal print. So great for jazzing up anything, from outfit accessories to desk and phone accessories, right?

five things Friday: end of winter blues

Don't stores just kill you with all the spring things in all their lightweight fabrics and pretty colors right now? It's way too soon to wear any of it, being STILL WINTER, and it just adds insult to injury when I'm so ready to be done with wearing the same pair of boots and 3 sweaters over and over. But I've found a compromise to the ready for a color pick-me-up but it's too soon for spring ones problem... Bright blue!

It's so cheerful but still heavy enough to suit the season, just what I need to get through this last bit of winter. Plus the wearables work both now and later (provided you don't have too much snow for wearing flats at the moment!). The color looks good with winter layers and brightens up those dark neutrals, but then how cute will the jacket be with white jeans come spring-ier weather?! Or the purse with a cute sleeveless striped dress when it becomes season appropriate.

If you're in need of more happy hues, for yet another wintery weekend, I've got some more here - otherwise, have a good one!

five things Friday: navy & white stripes edition

Since I've got navy & white stripes on the brain from yesterday, here's a roundup of some other great things I've come across in one of my very favorite patterns:

navy & white and striped all over
1. baby outfit | 2. clutch | 3. sleeveless top | 4. sandals | 5. pillow

As if I need more navy & white striped things in my life, but I kind of love all of these - and that adorable baby outfit is the most tempting of the bunch, I have to say (the knee patches!). I think this little one is in danger of being non-stop outfitted in blue and white stripes. At least we'll match.

Have a good weekend, all!

five things Friday: next favorite color edition

Last week I treated myself to a new nail polish when I happened upon a display of the Essie summer collection at Target, realizing later that it's pretty much the same color as a striped scarf I fell in love with for a crazy good deal at Forever 21 - whose hue looks rather like yesterday's blazer...

And after several other things in this shade captured my attention as well, I realized my favorite happy red/orange color has competition for top choice - and this great coraly pink might just be winning at the moment:
pretty in pink
1. Essie Sunday Funday polish | 2. Seychelles wedges | 3. Gap dress | 4. Lamps Plus gourd lamp | 5. Zazzle personalized iPhone case

All of the above perfect for a summer weekend, right? Hope you get a chance to get out there and enjoy!

five things Friday: happy color edition

For dinner last weekend, I threw on my current favorite lightweight cardigan (and longstanding favorite necklace) and arrived to the restaurant to find one of our friends sporting a blouse in the exact same shade of orange. But of course it's such great color - it's always eye-catching, and how could a girl not want one of everything she spies in it?

So to start off the weekend, here's the great cardigan along with some other fun stuff in a similar cheery orange hue (which JCrew labels bright persimmon):

1. CB2 chair | 2. JCrew cardigan | 3. Ikea rug | 4. CB2 tray | 5. Jeweliq necklace

Hope your weekend is as bright and happy as all of this!
