pin to present: pretty painted ornaments

If you're anything like me: you have a whole lot of cardboard boxes thanks to online Christmas shopping, and a toddler who goes on nap strike 2-3 times per week (gah!). And if so, this cardboard painted ornaments project is for you.

On a no-nap afternoon I got out some acrylic paints from my stash (that match my decor, of course!), and Hendrik and I set to work on these shapes that I had cut out from cardboard boxes. He was so into it that we sat for well over an hour painting side by side.

I decided to turn mine into a fun little garland for our dining room fireplace (as seen on yesterday's holiday home tour) by just taping them onto some ribbon. He overloaded his already full mini Christmas tree with his own shapes once they dried - which took several hours thanks to the copious amounts of paint. Amounts that were well worth the peaceful quiet activity time.

Decorating cutout cookies is also a fun (and equally messy) holiday season activity we've been enjoying together. Got any other ideas to pass along? (Especially for when our babysitters are all on college Christmas break?!)

  1. Oh what a fun idea! I've got both a bored toddler and lots of boxes, so I need to do this one!! I bought a Gingerbread house kit that we need to try to do soon too.

  2. Two of my favorite bloggers use to do a link up like this once a month. I loved it because it made me look through my Pinterest board and actually get some crafting done. I love how yours turned out. You would never guess it was just cardboard.

  3. I love this. Definitely saving for next year. Right now Aubrey would paint everything, not just the ornaments...but maybe a crayon version would be worth a try for now. :)
