Ask me again how I feel in a few weeks, but right now I'm actually having fun with seeing what variety I can get into the lunchbox... Now, I'm a person who doesn't mind eating the same breakfast and the same lunch every day, so I'm fine with him doing that too (and he really does eat a lot of PB&J, as his first preference), but he's also quite a good eater, so we try to run with it! And of course, having the bento box makes it way more fun to pack, because there's something quite satisfying about filling in each slot.
In case you're racking your brain (or I am, in a few months when the novelty wears off), here are some ideas we like for the various compartments in our Bentgo box - which we would highly recommend, by the way. We're on year 2 of use and still going strong.
Mains:
- PB&J
- Sliced ham + cheese with crackers ("lunchable")
- Zucchini bread
- Muffin
- Spaghetti + meatballs (in a thermos)
- Mac + cheese (in a thermos)
- Yogurt + granola
Fruits:
- Sliced apple (+ peanut butter)
- Sliced pear
- Grapes
- Sliced peaches (or diced peaches from a jar)
- Strawberries
- Unsweetened applesauce
- Raisins
Veggies:
- Carrots (+ hummus)
- Celery (+ peanut butter and raisins, for ants on a log)
- Spinach salad with cashews and dried cherries
- Leftover roasted beans or broccoli
"Lunch time bin" (the snacky bonus things that he gets to have one of per day):
- Granola bar (favorites are Annie's or Clif Kids)
- Fruit strip
- Fruit snacks
- Trail mix
- Bunny grahams
- Cookie
With this I should note that we are lucky to not have any peanut butter restrictions in H's lunch room, and also noting my great debt to last year's Montessori teachers who stipulated that the children should have a vegetable in their lunch. Hendrik wouldn't eat lunchtime veggies if I told him to, but from them he took it on authority, and ever since last year he's expected to see one in every lunch. Win!
