wearing lately: butterfly colors

It feels a bit weird to be writing an outfit post (but then what doesn't feel weird in these times?), especially with photos taken at a place that is now closed to the public for the next month - but in the short window between our family cancelling work/school/events for ourselves due to Peter and Hendrik being sick and starting our social distancing, we went out for an evening together and I'm so glad we had the chance to do it. And since Hendrik and I had a mini me moment you know it has to get shared...

It's been a super long time since I coordinated our outfits this much on purpose (though I've always loved it!), and it was only semi-accidental here. We were going to Frederik Meijer Gardens for a members' night to see the butterflies in their tropical conservatory, and our little budding scientist knows that butterflies are attracted to bright colors, so we wanted to dress accordingly.

In my wardrobe that has gone more and more neutral over the years, it took digging down to the bottom of a pile for this cobalt sweater that is probably (aside from my denim jacket) the oldest thing in my closet. It's been quite a while since I've pulled it out, but even as one who is pretty good about getting rid of stuff that I don't wear frequently, I thought this might still deserve a place on the sweater shelf. And here it is again! Then since I had just gotten this new button-down shirt for Hendrik (kid keeps growing out of things!) in a similar color, I thought I'd echo it with my own gingham. Aren't we cute?

It was fun to enjoy this family night out, and now of course it's family time galore as Hendrik is off from school for 4 weeks, and we are also taking the social distancing seriously - I made one big grocery stock-up at the end of last week which we hope will last us for a couple of weeks, we're not going out anywhere else aside from walks/bike rides (and at this point, Peter does have to work), and we've of course cancelled our spring break trip. Though it feels weird and extreme - and often a big bummer too - this is important: as hopefully we've all learned by now, in order to flatten the curve of spreading this coronavirus, we have to act ahead of the spread.

I'll link below two articles I found really helpful in setting this mentality personally, and if you're not staying home/keeping your social web of interactions as small as possible right now, perhaps you'll give them a look to understand how this slowing will only work if we actually take seriously and follow advice to stay home...
