staying in, week 12

Another week in quarentimes. A friend just told me that our kids have been out of school for as long as summer break is. And with Hendrik's last day of school being today, that means we've got 12 more weeks of no school to go. Wow (you can read that as good or bad... it's both!). In other corona news, our state started opening up more, removing the full shelter in place earlier than planned, and actually it just stresses me out. Just because gathering in small groups or shopping in person or sitting down in a restaurant is allowed doesn't mean it's for sure a smart choice, given that people are definitely still sick and transmitting it - so my family is not changing anything about our activities for the time being. We'll look at the numbers and reassess in a couple of weeks.

Speaking of numbers, since we really are winding down with the strict social distancing, I thought I'd wind down this weekly series with a look back at our unusual 12 weeks, by the numbers:

0 times setting foot in any store of any kind since March 13
1 vacation cancelled
2 weeks our routine of family cleaning Saturday mornings lasted before the situation devolved (and 5 bi-weekly visits from our housecleaner missed, so that tells you what the floors look like around here)
2.5 Harry Potter books I have read aloud to the family, so far
3 new Lego sets to keep Hendrik occupied
5 batches of muffins baked with Hendrik (chocolate and Kodiak Cakes blueberry), as it's his current favorite breakfast and also got hours left to occupy, even after the Legos!
6 feet, the number that's in all of our socially distanced lingo now
11 weeks of home schooling
14-ish hours spent on work Zoom calls, which is not normal - I always work full-time from home and get by with handling everything on email, but now that everybody else is at home too, I guess they're feeling chatty? Thanks, but no thanks. (And 1 hour = time limit on H entertaining himself before he shows up in the background of my video screen...)
22:11 minutes to run my virtual 5k when the Tulip Time race was cancelled
23 yoga classes completed on the Peloton app, making me miss the gym a lot less than I expected
25 books read (escapist much?)
39 dollars spent on a year-long membership to our local grocery stores' pickup service - and 100x that in appreciation for the workers who are doing this job so I can stay in my car
90 scooter rides (approximately) I've gone out with Hendrik on
497 miles ridden on my bike either outdoors or on the basement trainer, in the absence of spin classes at the gym (also including a few fun family rides)

It's been an interesting few months, to say the least. As of now, I'm a bit relieved that we're wrapping up the school year, but also a bit curious how a summer with no camps or babysitters will go.

Will continue to do what I've done all along in this surprise homeschooling journey though... try to enjoy the bonus time that I have with my boy (which, yes, sometimes includes Starbucks drive-thru dates), while also trying to come up with plenty ways to keep him quietly occupied in another room so I can pretend I'm by myself. Ha!

A happy socially-distanced weekend to you all.
