Of course I'm missing so many of our usual holiday season gatherings/activities, but this weekend I'll especially be sad about the not-happening extended family cookie baking/decorating-palooza that we usually do at my parents' house the weekend before Christmas with siblings, cousins, aunts/uncles, and grandparents all. Sacrificing the traditions this year in the hopes that we will all be healthy and alive and able to gather next year, but at least there is a bit of hope of progress toward that end: Peter is getting his first Covid vaccine dose today!
In honor of my family's traditional in-person gathering, I thought I'd have a virtual cookie swap this weekend instead. And the beauty of that is that you all can be invited too! Here are 5 favorite recipes I have posted about in the past that would be great for baking and enjoying in your home this holiday season - or perhaps you could leave some on some porches and spread the joy.
1. cut-out cookies: this is the recipe that my family uses, and Hendrik and I have already made a batch this year! Which looked much more like a sprinkle explosion than these fancy frosted decorations that I used to do before having a kid - but either way, taste is great.
2. peanut butter balls: these make me think first and foremost of my namesake, my great grandma Angeline, from whom my family's version of this recipe came (basically same as this one). Even if they're not specifically Christmas flavors, peanut butter + chocolate is the best flavor combo for every day of the year, and also my great grandma's birthday was in December so I always think of her this time of year as well. So peanut butter balls just seem right for the holidays, and it's been way too long since I made them anyway.
3. cookie pie: another thing it's been way too long since I've made is this chocolate chip M&M cookie pie, which might possibly be my all-time favorite version of a chocolate chip cookie. If you like yours chewy-gooey, this recipe is for you! And it is very Christmasy if you use the holiday M&Ms of course.
4. snickerdoodle bars: for a little variety of flavor, the cinnamon of a snickerdoodle is a nice holiday season treat. And making them in bar form is even quicker and easier than regular cookies.
5. chocolate peppermint cookies: couldn't have a holiday treats roundup without including something peppermint. These ones are the perfect chewy chocolate cookie with crushed up candy canes mixed in.
Out of all of these, I think the peanut butter balls are definitely the ones I need to make and use to spread some IRL Christmas cheer to my family members. What favorite holiday treat recipes do you have to swap?
