reading lately: spring break book hauls

Sad to say, we ended up having to cancel our spring break road trip to St. Louis when Peter ended up needing to work/be on call for his practice. We all did a good job of rolling with it though, and Hendrik and I made it a mission to visit as many local book stores and toy stores as we could, and a few bakeries and other fun shops along the way of course. We came home with more treats and treasures than we normally would, but some consolation prizes were in order - not to mention that when the AirBnB refund came through, it felt like we had a bunch of free money. Ha!

So instead of a travel recap of spring break, here's a little recap of our haul...

For the momma: Of course I don't *need* any more books, but... I had recently heard about Songs in Ursa Major being loosely based on the relationship between James Taylor and Joni Mitchell and have been wanting to read it, so I snagged it at one bookstore. We checked out one used book store too, and while most often my experience at them is "oooh I loved that book... but darn I already read it" this time I could have come home with tons - but Freddie was in need of wrangling so I stopped at just these two: Our American Friend (about a fictional first lady with some Cold War era secrets and intrigue) and Mary Jane (got a bit of a musician theme going here!).

For the big kid: Aside from a big set of Pokemon cards, across our various outings Hendrik picked out Love That Dog (a novel in verse for us to buddy read - already done and enjoyed!), Spy Ski School, the next book in a series he started at school, and a couple of Wings of Fire supplemental books since he's very into that series (and already owns all the others) - a prequel and some short stories. Oh and also had to share a book that was in his Easter basket - he's enjoyed some of the comic strips that we used to like as kids (in the actual newspaper!), so I thought I'd introduce him to The Far Side. It's a hit.

For the toddler: Freddie was mostly along for the ride (and the display train tables at the toy stores!), but with how into the Very Hungry Caterpillar he is lately, we just had to get this book and a cutie plush one that I added to his Easter basket at the last minute. Seeing him hug it or wave "hi" to it is just the cutest thing.
