wearing lately: fall favorites

While I am not really on top of taking/editing outfit photos these days, I've really been feeling the fall wardrobe lately. Honestly, it helps that we've had a decently warm stretch for fall, so I can actually wear my jackets and cute jeans + sneakers with bare ankles looks instead of already having to cover up everything with boots and big coats. That'll be coming of course.... But for now, here is a little capsule of what have been my faves - they all mix and match so well that you can just imagine my cute outfits :)

Several of these are old favorites - and really, the stovepipe jeans and sweater blazer that I've had for years are kind of season-less. They're lovely in fall with some rusty and burgundy type pairings, in particular - and along with a few new (okay, there have been a lot of good sales lately!) items to mix and match. Definitely best purchase of this fall has been my new sneakers - they make every outfit so cute and fun and they're so easy to wear. Currently it's a gloriously sunny fall day in the 60s and I have on the jeans, henley, and sneakers - and even though it's simple and has no layering, the colors and textures and little details just make it feel like an outfit.

I'm loving my navy cross-body bag too. Perfect size to hold a book on the occasion I'm out and about by myself, it comes with two straps (cloth and leather) to change up your look, and I got it monogramed too. So snazzy!

wearing lately: gray plaid scarf

Last week I wore gray plaid styled for work and weekend, and as promised, here are two more ways to do it in another form - cozy scarf - dressed up and down, for day and date night.

First, up, the daytime version: earlier in the month I wore the dress/scarf combo as envisioned when I put together the November mini wardrobe lineup, with the sneakers and denim jacket, which was perfect for errands and such. But by now it's definitely turned into tights weather (first snow this weekend!), so for church yesterday I pulled out some suede booties instead - and that's part of what I love about my mini wardrobe concept. It's not meant to be restrictive but to give me easy outfit inspiration. So if I want to change out the shoes, I get to!

And then for date night, the same scarf adds a graphic touch to a jeans/blouse combo, with the moto jacket to take the cool factor up a notch for a delicious tapas dinner.

I think the day look might have to make another appearance for Thanksgiving - the color scheme seems just right, and of course there's the no waistband thing... But then I'm moving on to all the holiday-ish stuff in my closet for December! New lineup to come next week, which hopefully will give you plenty of seasonal outfit inspiration too.

wearing lately: gray plaid sweater

As you can see from my November mini wardrobe, my neutral of the moment is definitely gray - and even better, in plaid form. So, utilizing those November selections, this week we've got gray plaid styled two ways: for work and for weekend.

wearing lately: gray plaid sweater

This gray plaid sweater was kind of irresistible when I saw it at Target - it's basically wearing a blanket. Thus the weekend wear applications are obvious... and I'm pretty sure this is my new ultimate in comfy but still really cute: cool sneakers, graphic tee, little bit of bling. However, with a belt and some boots, I think it can be totally work appropriate by making it a little more streamlined and polished.

So, definitely add "blanket cardigans" to my list of fall blanket loves (already on the list: scarves, and of course blankets). Have you been wearing any of thees this month?

Stay tuned for next week's edition: gray plaid in scarf form, for day and for date night.

wearing lately: November mini wardrobe

What to wear in November? I'm going with layers of gray... Here are the items from my wardrobe that I picked out to be my go-tos for mixing & matching this month - so helpful in narrowing down the options when I'm staring at the whole closet every morning. And also so cozy now that it's gotten to real fall layering weather!

Speaking of layering... for the first ensemble, I guess pretty much the goal was to show as many of the pieces as possible in one outfit. Piling it on is perfect for a crisp fall Saturday, and when you've got stylish pieces like an embroidered tee and leather tote, plus cool pieces like black jeans and slip-on sneakers, it feels put-together rather than just practical. Wouldn't it also be perfect for some pre-holiday things like going to pick out a Christmas tree.

wearing lately: date night

In the last couple of years, I feel like I've pretty well figured out my personal style: my "basics with a twist" can easily take me from working from home to mom duty to running errands to brunch and more, feeling put-together, polished, and me. The trouble comes when it's time for things like date night... A wardrobe of basics is really versatile for the everyday, but when you want to feel fancy, they feel, well, a little basic. New solution? The leather moto jacket!

Paired with some of the most basic things I own - jeans, striped tee, black flats - I've got an outfit that has a little extra something to take it from day at home to evening trying out a gastropub with my hubs.

What's your go-to date night look? I think I could make a couple more with this jacket and other items from my October mini wardrobe...

five things Friday: black jeans for every girl edition

Recently when my two pairs of jeans were both dirty at the same time, I got the chance to remember how great black jeans are... Just like white jeans, I find that they give an outfit just a little extra sophistication. Or oomph. (Both of which are good). Here are 5 ways to wear black jeans for every persona this fall (using just items from my October mini wardrobe - which means there are plenty more combos to be had in every wardrobe!):

professional: though I'm technically wearing jeans, when you add in this many other professional elements (collared shirt, cardigan, tortoise necklace, smart-lady glasses), how can they not be work appropriate?

sporty: keeping it casual for the weekend with sneakers and a graphic tee (basically the black jeans version of this outfit from earlier this week - easy peasy).

parisian: just a simple striped tee, flats, and a red lip - ooh la la. Black jeans make this even more chic, right?

cozy: wrapping up in a huge scarf is one of the best ways to feel cozy - keep it all in place with a belt, and turn up the sophistication a notch with black denim rather than the usual.

cool: nothing makes me feel the cool-girl vibes more than a leather moto jacket, until I added a graphic tee underneath, that is. And then to me the black jeans just feel a little edgier than regular with this combo.

How are you wearing yours lately? More ideas for me?

wearing lately: neutral nelly

While my September mini wardrobe had lots of rich burgundy and navy, I really toned things down to the neutral zone with October - but I'm here to say that neutral doesn't necessarily mean boring! Here's one example:

This was an outfit of some comfortable basics for an day of walking around the city on a fall day to see more of Art Prize - but the basics and neutrals are taken up a notch with shiny gold details and snazzy sneakers, ending up at just the right volume level for a casual but pulled-together look.

(And I guess if all else fails, just stand in front of some colorful art. Can't call that dull!)

wearing lately: October mix & match wardrobe

My September mini wardrobe was so much fun to work with that I thought I'd head toward another section of my closet to get some inspiration for what to wear in October: the neutrals. This little exercise isn't meant to restrict my options in any way; rather it should help me be excited about using what's in my closet - and when I put these neutral items together in this way, I most definitely am feeling enthusiastic about the bold outfit possibilities that black and white and camel can combine to make for any occasion, from casual to dressy:

This October lineup has some repeats from last month, and a bunch of things that have been used for several seasons now, all helped along in being awesomer with one addition, a big splurge thanks to my partnership with Shopbop: a leather jacket! Rather excited about this one, because I'm always on the lookout for what can make my outfits more cool for going out - and what's cooler than a leather moto jacket?

For starters, it was the perfect way to take my striped dress from day to night for the transition from my recent afternoon of walking around at Art Prize to the evening wine bar reception. Snazzy, right? Looking forward to pairing it with the black jeans for a cool date night outfit soon...

This Madewell moto jacket is amazing, by the way. The leather is so buttery smooth and the perfect weight, and I love the cropped length and cool silhouette. It's a major splurge to be sure - but if you like the idea, check brands like BB Dakota and Blank Denim for vegan/faux options.

29 September 2015

wearing lately: blue suede boots

With my September mini wardrobe I was trying not only to make life simpler by pre-picking out some go-to items for any outfit I might need this month, but also to help avoid the "buy all the things" wardrobe urge that comes with a new season... However, a few well-placed purchases can really make a difference in updating a seasonal wardrobe and my attitude about it, and so I furthered the mix & match of it all by adding a couple of new things to my lineup of well-worn basics.

In Residence | wearing lately: blue suede boots

Thanks to Ted & Muffy, one thing I got to pick out to update my wardrobe this month was a new pair of boots, and this blue suede pair was an excellent way to go. The rich and slightly unexpected color made them a great fall addition to my wardrobe for how they freshen up the basics of jeans, tees, and simple dresses that were already in my closet - especially as they work both dressed up and dressed down. Here's one way I've done each so far.

Shopping the Ted & Muffy site was fun because with their theme of "fairytale fit", all the names of the shoes made me feel like I was shopping with Harry Potter in Diagon Alley or something (such as the Albus and the Draco, which are both very sharp but I also kind of just wanted for their names). I love that they tell you for each different style exactly the calf/shoe width of your specific size - plus have customizable options for both. And with this pair I also love how gorgeous this blue suede is both in looks and in feel, how nice the contrast of the sole/heel looks with the color, how perfectly comfortable the heel height is (while still giving me a little boost), and how the classic shape looks great with both jeans and dresses thanks to the dip in the front of the boot. All around recommend!

Also fun? All the outfits I put together from my September mini wardrobe (and there were tons more possibilities beyond the few I blogged). So much fun that I'm doing it again next month with a new color scheme - stay tuned!

wearing lately: white jeans for fall

The next featured item in the mini wardrobe of go-to pieces for when I need a quick-but-cute outfit idea this month: the white jeans. I love them for September because they carry in a bit of summer for the nice sunny days, but they're so easy to give a more fall-like vibe by changing up the rest of your colors and accessories. And they feel fresh as always!

In Residence | wearing lately; white jeans for fall

I also love how they can mix and match with pieces in my lineup to work for both day and date night... For running around town, sneakers and my cool mom backpack are super functional, and the gingham/jacket/statement necklace combo felt polished but not overdone. And then for going out, they're easily dressed up with a blouse. Swapping out the summer's strappy sandals for ankle boots, and going rich cognac with the footwear and grown-up lady handbag makes it feel season appropriate too.

The dressed up look was intended to be done with the fab navy ankle boots that I picked out as one of the couple of additions to freshen up my wardrobe for this fall, but unfortunately they didn't arrive in time - no matter, this isn't a hard-and-fast capsule, just a way to get myself utilizing my wardrobe and making it easier to get dressed in the morning (or evening!), so I was more than happy to pull out my favorite ankle boots from last year for the first time this fall. But next week, just you wait - ankle boots two ways!

p.s. check out these other bloggers who are similarly working their mix & match style this fall by picking out fall staples from their closets and perhaps adding a well-thought piece or two to make the basics feel new...
  • I was very pleased to see that Shea's lineup also has a gingham shirt (more ideas to copy!),
  • I love how Megan shopped her own closet to find a uniform,
  • and I'm totally on board with all of Jenna's fall staples and excited to make some more outfits from my versions!
