mini me Monday

Last fall Hendrik moved up from the toddler room at daycare, and these days, if anyone tries to refer to him as a toddler, he very quickly corrects their language: "no, I'm a young preschooler!" The transition in stages has been solidified lately by his (finally) coming to an interest and success in using the potty, and in our sending in the deposit for his official 5-day-a-week preschool for next fall (eeps!).

 photo preschooler3_zpspeuazfdp.jpg

It's always bittersweet moving to a new stage but sometimes hard to remember it at the time. Like back when he was a baby and I was having fun introducing him to new foods - and totally ready to not have to buy formula anymore - it wasn't quite at the forefront of my mind to pay attention to the last time I ever got to feed him a bottle. Moving from the toddler to preschool stage of life has a bunch of things I really want to leave behind (tantrums! diapers! tantrums about diaper changes!), but I'm using this as my reminder to savor some of the last little things before he is a full-on BOY both in size and in spirit, with all the great things and also new challenges that will bring. For posterity, some of the bittersweet changes over the last months:

Goodbye long stroller dog walks, hello riding along on the big boy bike!

Goodbye diapers, hello Thomas the Tank Engine undies.

Goodbye Duplos, hello Legos (actually, who am I kidding. We spend hours and hours with both).

Goodbye nap time, hello figuring out how to enforce "quiet time" (and hello earlier bedtime??).

Goodbye adorable size 7 rocketship shoes, hello new size 8 "fast shoes" (his first Nikes, which he is so pleased to match mom + dad in).

Goodbye crib, hello toddler bed (and excuse to pick out new sheets!)

Goodbye constant asking of "why?", hello nonsensical jokes and potty talk.

Goodbye YouTube snippets, hello full-length Finding Nemo (becoming a big boy who goes on the potty all the time has its perks, one of which is being deemed old enough to watch a whole movie).

Goodbye easy wooden peg puzzles, hello fun jigsaw puzzles.

Goodbye needing assistance with everything to get out the door, hello learning to put on a coat and boots (on the wrong feet, naturally).

And while I don't want to baby my big boy, I'm glad we've not yet said goodbye to wanting to sit on my lap when we read books, and the willingness to hand out enormous, full-body hugs. Because I'm pretty sure that before I know it he's going to be bigger than me.

mini me Monday: toddler talk

Lately I've been trying to write down some of Hendrik's statements - it's always hard to believe I'll forget these funny and clever things, but time just has a way of doing that. Not to mention that he talks so much that there's always something new (and if he doesn't know the word he's looking for, he'll just completely make one up) So for a little Monday entertainment, here is some of the toddler (going on teenager) talk I've recorded around here, along with some silly outtakes from our fall photo shoot.

In response to the question of when he's going to be potty trained: When I'm a man. (And, in response to the potty chart we were supposed to start at daycare after Christmas: I think I'll do that potty chart at the end of January.) OY VEY.

In response to threats of discipline: Well, what's the consequence option? GAH.

Surmising, after discovering the wonders of hot chocolate on a snowy day: In the summertime, we can have cold chocolate!

In response to the question "who's your favorite 'miss'?" (which is what he calls his babysitters/teachers, e.g., Miss Emily, Miss Nicole): Miss Mommy.

 photo
hoekman_oct16_6900_zpsnwhivjms.jpg

Out of the blue, while he was eating lunch: Mommy, will you be my sister? (Melt my heart!)

With the most delighted and amazed expression when opening a birthday gift: why is it a vehicle book?!

In response to "he's going with his friends" being the reason Hendrik and I were not going along on daddy's ski trip: But can't I be daddy's friend?

Called out over his shoulder to some guys on the sidewalk who remarked on his bike as he whizzed past them: It's a big boy bike! My mommy bought it at the bike shop!

In response to anything he doesn't quite catch, or doesn't quite understand: Why you say that? or Talk about that. (Or when a little younger, he'd say to my mom, Gigi wants to talk about that.)

When I finally could bring myself to tell him the results of the election: But I don't WANT Donald Trump to be president! [in tears]. Me too, buddy.

 photo hoekman_oct16_7035_zpsd8hzaxn4.jpg

And a few Hendrik-isms - when he miss-hears a word, he just fills in what he thinks it should be, and then will not be convinced otherwise on what the word actually is (and in fact tries to wrongly correct us). Other times he just totally makes stuff up.

vehicles, as a group: wheel things; alternatively, con-vehicles
glue: blue (and there's no convincing him otherwise!)
toppings: top-things (as in for an ice cream sundae)
sunscreen: sunscream
electrician: light-trician
lobster: monsters (can't blame him on this one, after he encountered the lobster that was going into the pot for our dinner in Jamaica)

in the toddler diaper bag: holiday season essentials (+ giveaway!)

in the toddler diaper bag: holiday season essentials (+ giveaway!)

Though I'm out of the baby stage of parenting, I'm still a mom with the best baby bags on the brain - partly because my kid is still in diapers, and partly because even though we don't need the full-on diaper bag for running errands or trips to the library, we still need some specialized toddler gear for dinners out or full afternoons away - which happens a lot during the holiday season, of course.

So for all of our Christmas events this month - and especially this week - here's what we're carting around.

Our holiday event essentials for toddler include: entertainment in the form of coloring/sticker play packs from the Target dollar spot (these things are amazing and worth way more than $1 in entertainment value!), sippy cup (he's just not trustworthy enough with a regular one, especially when someone else's carpet is at stake!), diaper clutch (don't need the whole kit and kaboodle anymore, but don't risk leaving the house without one), wet wipes (for sticky hands and faces thanks to many holiday treats), extra mittens (because we are always misplacing them).

I think a leather backpack like this is perfect for mom style, and complements many of my favorite holiday outfits right now too.

mini me Monday: book advent calendar

Every year I think how fun it would be to do a DIY advent calendar... on about December 2. But with Hendrik at the age where he's really looking forward to Christmas for the first time, and the timely sighting of this idea, I'm finally on it: a kids' Christmas book-a-day advent calendar.

I think an advent calendar is so fun for kids, and even better to make it bookish! By wrapping up the books and numbering them we get a fun + festive display in the playroom, and a super great trick for getting Hendrik excited to do nap time, since I'm planning to save the new book of the day for reading then...

And if you get on it, you can totally still do this - most of my books came from the library, which very helpfully in my case puts special stickers on the spines of Christmas books, so I could just scan the shelves and pull off the relevant ones. We also had a few Christmas books around here that I added in - wrapping paper makes something seem really exciting and new! - and I bought a couple of new ones that I knew would be classics for our family: The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Merry Christmas Stinky Face (we love the original Stinky Face), and Merry Christmas Mom and Dad (fun Little Critter throwback from my childhood!). Amazon Prime can help with that, and you don't need to have every book lined up from day 1 (I can't put all of ours out at once anyway, for fear of overtaxing the shelves).

I included some of the ones I'm most looking forward to reading in the widget below - but any other favorite Christmas books to recommend to us for next year?

mini me Monday: Hendrik at three

Continuing our tradition of capturing a phase of our family's life along with a favorite part of our town at the same time, around Hendrik's 3rd birthday we had a little photo session at a lakeside park where we spend a lot of time walking and playing on the playground. The results are bittersweet... they turned out so great, but he looks way too old and grown up. (Never mind the ones that he was totally cheese-balling.)

 photo hoekman_oct16_6900_zpsnwhivjms.jpg

A photo session with our threenager involved a lot of cajoling and bribery, kind of to the point of frustration, but I clearly should have just relaxed and trusted that our photographer would work her magic. The results totally show the sweetness, silliness (and yes, stubbornness) of our little mister.

And a few years in to this whole family photo thing, I feel like I've got the outfit selections down without having to put too much thought into it (especially thanks to the duh move of not having Hendrik try on the new sweater I was intending for him to wear, finding out it is still way too big, and thus having to come up with backup outfits for him and Peter 10 minutes before the session). Pretty happy with our coordinated but not overly matchy variations on navy. Shop the outfits of my mini and me...

around town: kid-friendly Cincinnati

I used to write occasional "around town" posts of our adventures (and eats!) around Cincinnati, which I've certainly been missing after moving away a year ago. But our recent family mini-vacation there gave me the opportunity to bring back this series, this time with a kid-friendly twist, since all of our outings were geared that way (fun, but meant no dining at Boca...).

In Residence | around town lately: Cincinnati food and fun

Some fun Cincinnati things to do with kids in tow:

Reds game: we actually picked that particular weekend to visit Cincinnati because the Cubs were in town - so we really called it "going to a Cubs game", but either way, fun. This stadium is good for bringing kids because there's plenty of room to roam behind the stands (including a kids play zone, actually), and you can get tickets that aren't too expensive. Also you can bring in your own snacks! Hendrik's attention didn't last terribly long - good thing I had some stickers in my purse as well...

Cincinnati Zoo: despite the recent uproar over that kid falling into the gorilla enclosure debacle, this is a great zoo. Gorgeous flowers in the spring, great Christmas light displays in the winter, and year-round good animal sightings plus a train (major hit with the toddlers). We especially like how up close you can get to the giraffes.

Children's Museum: so much to do for a range of ages - there's a baby area that we visited with Hendrik before we moved, but it was even more fun to come back at this age, so he could do all. the. things: mini town (including grocery store, vet's office, diner, auto shop, etc.), train tables, ball fun zone, pretend forest climbing area, construction zone with crane. A little pricey maybe, but you can spend a long time there.

Greater's: pretty much my favorite ice cream ever, so you know I had to make a trip while we were in town - and since it was a special vacation weekend, we decided ice cream would be acceptable for lunch. Hendrik's mind = blown.

Eli's BBQ: a great option for dining out with kids, as it's an outdoor picnic table, BYOB kind of place. And the BBQ is awesome. We met up with a whole bunch of friends there, and the kids could run around and play while we waited for the food (and while we spent a long time catching up after).

Besides a trip to Ikea (to buy the play kitchen, but also plenty for kids to do/eat around there!) and brunch at Green Dog Cafe, this is what we managed to cram into our weekend, but there are lots of other things for families too: a bunch of great parks (especially Washington Square Park in the summer), Newport Aquarium, King's Island amusement park, Ozo Play Cafe, King Arthur's Toy Store in Oakley, and more.

All of these fun family activities got me ready to hunt down the great ones in our current town... so far we've visited the big apple orchard and done the downtown fall festival. What fun things do you do with kids in your town?

triple scoop 3rd birthday party

In Residence: triple scoop 3rd birthday party

It was so fun planning for Hendrik's birthday this year because he was so excited for it to arrive (though not quite able to understand the wait: "so my birthday is tomorrow!" he's been saying for weeks), and because it was super easy to just give this kid everything he could want: "top-things" on ice cream is the highlight of his life right now, so when he requested an ice cream party, this triple scoop 3rd birthday theme was born.

I did some crockpot chili for dinner, but the ice cream sundae bar was of course the main event for this party. To make the setting a little more ice cream shop-like, I rigged up a striped awning in the pass-through between the kitchen and dining room with some striped wrapping paper and tension rods. We put out a few flavors of our local Hudsonville ice cream so people could scoop their own, and then there were bowls with lots of options for topping - including Hendrik's top choice from the frozen yogurt shop, gummy rainbow strips - along with whipped cream and chocolate sauce, of course. Dipped cones were another fun little project that were a tasty hit, as were the favors of ice cream cones in cone-shaped bags that the kids were invited to fill with leftover toppings.

But if the above wasn't enough, there was also the "chocolate chip cake with pink frosting" that Hendrik has been requesting for months. Poppy definitely came through on that one, with some super tasty cake, seriously pink frosting, and cute little chocolate ice cream cone decorations.

We had such a fun time celebrating with our family, and this boy's excitement over the whole thing just melts his ice cream loving mother's heart (pun intended, thank you very much). Yet again, sweets-themed party for the win! (See also cupcake tasting 30th birthday and cutie pie 1st birthday.)

pin to present: DIY car ramp

After showing off the finished playroom earlier this week, I now have to show off the latest addition: the car ramp. These days "cars and trucks" is Hendrik's first response whenever anyone asks what he wants to play, so I knew I just had to try out this DIY when I spotted it!

 photo pin-present197_zpsbsswngjy.jpg

Isn't this a fun idea? Prop it up to make a speedy ramp for the cars, or just lay it on the ground to drive cars off the end into a "parking lot" (Hendrik's favorite way to play). To make it, I found a piece of pine at Lowes that didn't even need to be cut. Then I got a piece of trim that I just had to cut in half, attach to the sides with wood glue, and spray paint black. The finishing touch is the awesome road tape.

around the house: the playroom

One of the (many!) things that sold me immediately on our house when we first viewed it is the options available to use various rooms for different purposes, depending on the current stage/needs of our family - like the current dining room being also a great space for a den/library, and the house's original dining room being a fabulous playroom that I can imagine transitioning really well from a little kid room to a homework room to a teenager hangout. Another thing that sold me on the house? This room's chalkboard wall! Here's what the toddler-friendly incarnation the playroom looks like:

Needless to say, this is one of our most used rooms in the house, so it's one of the first that I focused on decorating. The rug was the biggest new purchase (literally - it's a large room!). I love that it's whimsical but not super childish, and it was a great jumping off point for the accessory colors in the rest of the room.

I repurposed our old house's coffee table (which I had already DIY'd into a chalkboard table) and added some great little metal chairs, which has made the perfect coloring station that we've logged HOURS at. And besides playing, we love to do a lot of reading, so I made a couple of nooks for that, with the pouf and then the teepee, which I couldn't resist purchasing when I knew we had plenty of dedicated playspace in this house, because I think they're adorable. (Never mind that it mostly gets used as a napping spot for Ginger.)

And then there's the built-in... playroom perfection. It holds a gazillion legos, plus all of Hendrik's cars & trucks and puzzles and more. I love that all of the toys are out of the living room and they all have easy storage, plus Hendrik has inherited maybe a couple of OCD tendencies and is really good at putting all of the different toys in their designated drawers.
