around the house: patio

One of my spring goals was to give our backyard patio a bit of a makeover. With only some old chairs (and a lot of weeds) out there, we weren't utilizing the space at all. A few Memorial Day sales and several hours of weed picking later, we've got a patio that's been great for dining outdoors, having friends over for happy hour, or sitting while Hendrik plays on his also newly refreshed playscape!

It took a couple of tries to find the perfect thing, but I'm really pleased with the table and bench from Target - the price really wasn't bad as far as patio furniture goes (why is patio furniture so dang expensive, even if you're getting the "cheap" stuff?!), and the free shipping + free returns to the store if it doesn't work out = totally worth it. The other chairs were also on sale from CB2, and they're really comfortable. Everything has held up perfectly well since end of May, so I'm hopeful it'll all weather the elements long term (we'll bring the chairs/umbrella in for the winter though).

For accessories, I decided to use the colors in our existing plastic adirondack chairs and in the playscape. What used to look like sad, dirty old chairs and a garish yellow slide now looks like it was all meant to be, thanks to the fun pillow, turquoise umbrella, and my happen-to-match, already-owned dishes and placemats. Doesn't it look like the perfect evening setting for a summer dinner?

Oh, and notice the interesting lamp post? Not sure what year that went in, but for a while in the 1970s our house was the Red Cross headquarters for the area and we think the backyard was a parking lot at that point, so maybe it's left over from then? It took us a year and a half of living here to figure out how to turn it on, but now it's usable!

  2. Looks great! We are on our fourth summer here with same table and benches from Target! The outdoor rugs from Target hold up well too (of course, store in the off season).

  3. A free standing fire bowl/pit is so much fun too, all year, for marshies and hotdogs with little guys!

  4. I love the colors you picked! This will be such a relaxing place this Fall. Let the kids play, you cuddle up with a book! Perfection.

  5. You know I am digging all the teal accents - it looks perfect with the yellow. And I love that fun lamppost, how fun to have a piece of history right in your backyard?!

  7. Your backyard makeover looks great! That's such an interesting quirk about your house. Was it a residence first?

  8. I love how this turned out--the pops of bright color are so fun, and I love the lamp post with a (possible) story behind it. Our backyard is in need of some serious sprucing, but we had to spend our money on drainage issues instead right after we moved in. I hate it when "fun money" has to instead be spent on maintenance/function. Not fun :)
