five things Friday: new and notable edition

Happy Friday! It's the same-old (except not old, because summer and its activities are a ceaseless delight) routine for us this weekend with lake life + hopefully some golf for the boys (which = running and reading and relaxing time for me!). But before that, I actually have a random collection of some new & notable things to share:

1 | 23 | 4 | 5

1. increased water consumption: I have been drinking 80+ ounces of water per day for more than a year, so it's not a struggle for me to get in the water drinking, but I was still intrigued by the idea of a fun tumbler with lid and straw, having heard that it's even easier to down the liquids with a nice fat straw. Peter ordered this lidded tumbler for me for my birthday, and less than a week in to using it, it's pretty much my favorite water vessel ever. I'm drinking a bit more, and it's also more fun!

2. upgraded sunscreen: I received a sample of this Beautycounter sunscreen, and I love how light and non-greasy it feels. Definitely makes me more amenable to reaching for the sunscreen immediately, instead of first sitting outside for a while and then thinking, ugh, I should put on sunscreen - which is an upgrade that will make my skin happier in the long-run, I'm sure.

3. expanded book piles: I got SO many books for my birthday, and it was the best. The first one I picked up was Elizabeth Acevedo's new one, which is a YA novel in verse. Not the format I would typically read, but I knew I loved her from With the Fire on High, and it was really refreshing to have this different style, and also her perspective. Recommend! (Now to decide which other of my new books to pick up - I'm leaning toward Dominicana, as comparing/contrasting these two books about Dominican immigrants in  NYC that fall into two different genres sounds quite intriguing.)

4. downgraded cable: it occurred to us that we really haven't been using our cable at all, given that there are no sports to watch, so I thought I would check on the pricing (having not paid that much attention to it, as the bill auto-pays). And GEEZ. If I had thought to do this back in March, we would have been saving $75 per month. Instead we just paid for something we didn't use at all, and something we barely used even before March. So, did a major downgrade on that for the time being and will happily save the cash until sports come back and we decide we need ESPN again - or else thinking of trying a Fire TV Stick and trying to ditch the cable altogether (inspired by this how to cut the cord on cable post).

5. re-discovered recipe: I was making power balls quite frequently in the winter/early spring but for some reason hadn't made them in many weeks - but I'm back onto them now that my household remembered how good they are! And how easy to make too. Especially loving how they're served chilled from the fridge - perfect when coming home from a hot bike ride. Or as a delicious contrast to a cup of coffee on a sit-around-with-a-book kind of morning.

I like how bottom line these work together to give me even better reading time... more books, snacks that are nice with them, less temptation to tv time, plus $$ savings that could be channeled into even MORE books... Happy weekend reading to me, and hopefully to you too!
