Lately I've been trying to write down some of Hendrik's statements - it's always hard to believe I'll forget these funny and clever things, but time just has a way of doing that. Not to mention that he talks so much that there's always something new (and if he doesn't know the word he's looking for, he'll just completely make one up) So for a little Monday entertainment, here is some of the toddler (going on teenager) talk I've recorded around here, along with some silly outtakes from our fall photo shoot.
In response to the question of when he's going to be potty trained: When I'm a man. (And, in response to the potty chart we were supposed to start at daycare after Christmas: I think I'll do that potty chart at the end of January.) OY VEY.
In response to threats of discipline: Well, what's the consequence option? GAH.
Surmising, after discovering the wonders of hot chocolate on a snowy day: In the summertime, we can have cold chocolate!
In response to the question "who's your favorite 'miss'?" (which is what he calls his babysitters/teachers, e.g., Miss Emily, Miss Nicole): Miss Mommy.

Out of the blue, while he was eating lunch: Mommy, will you be my sister? (Melt my heart!)
With the most delighted and amazed expression when opening a birthday gift: why is it a vehicle book?!
In response to "he's going with his friends" being the reason Hendrik and I were not going along on daddy's ski trip: But can't I be daddy's friend?
Called out over his shoulder to some guys on the sidewalk who remarked on his bike as he whizzed past them: It's a big boy bike! My mommy bought it at the bike shop!
In response to anything he doesn't quite catch, or doesn't quite understand: Why you say that? or Talk about that. (Or when a little younger, he'd say to my mom, Gigi wants to talk about that.)
When I finally could bring myself to tell him the results of the election: But I don't WANT Donald Trump to be president! [in tears]. Me too, buddy.

And a few Hendrik-isms - when he miss-hears a word, he just fills in what he thinks it should be, and then will not be convinced otherwise on what the word actually is (and in fact tries to wrongly correct us). Other times he just totally makes stuff up.
vehicles, as a group: wheel things; alternatively, con-vehicles
glue: blue (and there's no convincing him otherwise!)
toppings: top-things (as in for an ice cream sundae)
sunscreen: sunscream
electrician: light-trician
lobster: monsters (can't blame him on this one, after he encountered the lobster that was going into the pot for our dinner in Jamaica)

This is adorable! Can't wait to capture some of the same little toddler moments when my son is a bit older and talking. It's funny the things you think you could never possibly forget, but then those memories get replaced with others down the road. Good for you for writing it down :)
ReplyDeleteSo many funnies!! I'm glad you're writing them down :) These will probably only get cuter and funnier as the years go on. And H, I say sunscream just for fun sooo you're not alone ;)
ReplyDeleteHendrik seems like such a smart little guy! Too funny and cute! You are such an inspiration as a mother. My girls just turned one - I will have to remember to do this once they start talking :-)
ReplyDeleteI can't handle top things and sunscream ahahahaha! I hope my future children are this hilarious!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness that last photo is too cute! :) Such a fun idea to write this all down. Will be so fun to look back on as he grows!
ReplyDeleteHe is too cute!
ReplyDeleteGoodness, I love this! What a little ham Hendrick is! I love the comment about "Miss Mommy." Precious. Also a bit jealous that he's so good for you in front of the camera. Aubrey refuses to have her picture taken these days, and it's so frustrating!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh this post makes me so excited to have our own little human soon!! Obviously a long time before she has cute little things to say like this, but OMG how fun that will be!
ReplyDeleteThis is just the cutest!! The what's the consequence one really got me laughing! At least he's thinking about consequences? :) This post reminded me of a note I have saved in my phone where I've saved funny things I'd never thought I'd have to say - I completely forgot about it and haven't added to it in awhile, but just looked at it again found gems like "quit brushing your hair with your toast" and "please don't put your feet on your plate"...haha!
ReplyDeleteAhh Anne he is TOO cute. Seriously, I mean all little kids are cute but he is a doll. That face! "Miss mommy" is so sweet, and I loved his "when I'm a man" comment. There are a lot of "whys" happening in our house too, and while sometimes it drives me up the wall I need to remember all the cute things that come with the aggravating ones. This made me smile :)
ReplyDeleteSo adorable! I love this whole post!
