These 5 items have all been mainstays of my wardrobe for a long time, but always in the faux (i.e. Target) version - and so I found myself replacing them a lot because the fit was a bit off or I was wearing through them so quickly. Thus their status as worth-it for investing - these items just look higher quality, fit better, and last longer than their cheaper counterparts. And I've found with the quality items, when you're careful with your purchases, they also have lasting power in terms of how much you like them, so they've been go-to pieces for a long time and will continue to be. Excellent cost-per-wear ratio (especially because even with "investments," I still wait for a sale or a coupon or a birthday...).
My items and some additional options, in case you want to get on board:
Since my winter capsule is set and thus I don't need any more clothes at the moment, I'm using my partnership with Shopbop over the next couple of months to think about one or two more investment items that will really add to my wardrobe long term, as mentioned earlier. Since two of the things I'm really going for in this capsule are luxe and a little (teeny) bit of edge, to add the twist to my neutrals/basics, I'm eyeing their selections of leather jackets and leather cross-body bags and clutches. The Marc Jacobs and Kate Spade ones get me especially jazzed...
In the meantime, I think the "save up for a few investment items" entry on my 30 before 30 list can officially be crossed off, with the above and my grown up lady handbag from a couple of years ago.

ReplyDeleteMy capsules have totally helped me figure out what I should upgrade in my wardrobe. Shoes have always made my list of things it's ok to spend $$ on since if you wear them a lot the cost per wear goes down a lot. However, I've experimented with a bunch of different style flats from target last year and I think for my spring capsule I'll be upgrading a few with designs I know I'll get lots of wear from. Some of my things I'm not sure about upgrading - I wear my chambray shirt a lot but the one I got at a good price from Old Navy is holding up very well. Not sure if it's really worth it to buy a more expensive version - thoughts?
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way with shoes - if you have just a few key pairs, it's worth the $$ to get ones you love and will last. Though I will say I've had some pretty good luck with Target/Old Navy flats a few times in the past. For something like a chambray shirt, if you find a fit that works well for you and it's holding up, and it happens to be an Old Navy one, I say lucky you! That's a deal :) I find that I just don't have good luck with fit when it comes to "cheaper" brands and end up being more satisfied with something I spend a little more on both in terms of how it looks on me and how it feels - a little more luxe.
DeleteI just purchased leopard flats last week and have already worn them so much! I never knew they were missing from my life so badly :)
ReplyDeleteLove love love that grey leather bag! Actually, I love all these things but that one is my favorite. Happy Friday!!
ReplyDeleteYou make a great point. I just bought my second pair of Target leopard flats and although they're okay, they do wear down pretty quickly and just don't have the same quality look of yours, which seem to have held up very well. That trench coat is absolutely beautiful, timeless and well worth it.
ReplyDeleteThese are such great investment pieces. I've been feeling the same way about trying to upgrade lately, and really focus on quality. The capsule has been helping with that too for sure. I'm still a budget girl at heart (mostly because, well, we have a tight budget usually) but when I do have money to spend I'm no longer thinking, how much crap can I buy with this, but what do I really need/what will I really wear? Love all of these picks! A couple on my "big ticket item" wishlist are a leather jacket and a leather bag. I'm terrible about buying cheap bags.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to add more specifically cognac leather ankle boots. I don't even wear my black ones as much as I thought I would because I'm always wearing my brown leather ones. I have seriously gotten my monies worth out of my pair.
ReplyDeleteThose are all great investment pieces! I, too, purchased a pair of ankle boots (the same ones as you!), a trench coat, and a transitional jacket. I'm so glad for those purchases; I wear them all of the time (weather permitting, of course).

I love your picks!! The trenchcoat and purse are my favorites :)
ReplyDeleteleopard flats are on my wishlist!! I love the ones you have!
ReplyDeleteOooh, I would love to get another pair of leopard flats. I've worn mine COUNTLESS times over the past several years, and they're starting to show their wear. I also love my olive cargo/utility jacket - it's a great outfit completer and outerwear piece :) I really want a leather jacket as well!
ReplyDeleteI have a pair of leopard flats that I got on Valentine's day oh about 5 years ago and I've basically worn them to death. Time for a new pair I think!! Love that fall jacket!
ReplyDeleteI have yo-yoed on weight so much with eating crappy in college, then getting in shape, having a baby, and getting in shape again that I haven't been able to really invest in anything yet. I can totally see why that would be a great idea, though! I am always for a good deal, but good quality too so it'll last longer. I'm going to have to check out your capsule wardrobe, I've been thinking about doing this!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up for H54F!

These are great! I used to buy a "fun" bag every season until I finally grew up a bit and realized how much better it would be to invest in a great leather tote. Four years later, I am carrying and loving that same brown leather bag!
ReplyDeleteLove those ankle boots, in particular, but all the items are definitely worth investment! It's just so hard to resist the pull of a $20 Target item! :) I've been loving how your winter capsule is evolving!
